Collaborative approach

Hello everyone! Welcome to period 2 and to a new entry of my English Didactics blog😊

We started a new period this week and the topic was the Collaborative approach and actually, we still had a little recap on Community language learning and how you need your tribe to learn, where nothing is prepared and everything flows naturally, then we learned about Task-based learning where planning is a must and small steps are ok when it comes to achieve big goals, however well-crafted projects are required as opposed to short activites, they are ok but we want to create bigger projects. And last but no least we learned that Content-based learning is collaborative when group work is promoted inside the classroom.

On yesterday's class we learned what collaborative activities are, and they are anyt activity where learners are asked to work in pairs or groups and discuss any topic, share tasks or engage in competitive activities.

We have:

  • Listening triangles: Learners get together in trios, each one has a function, a speaker, a questioner and a note-taker.
  • Talk partners: Learners are paired for short discussion activities, which is what we usually do in any class.
  • Think-Pair-Share: Learners prepare their information and then they explain it to their partner and after having discussed their thoughts they join with another pair to exchange  and share views to finally reach a conclusion.

We had many collaborative activites on yesterday's class and I really enjoyed it!

Here everyone was about to get into their groups.

First we worked wih the listening triangles, where teacher Orlando described a situation and we had to guess what teachin method it was, Miriam was the speaker, María was the questioner and Nathaly was the note-taker.

Here is Nathaly taking notes of what teacher Orlando was talking about.

Then, teacher Orlando got the Cuisinaire rods and we were divided into groups according to the colors of our rods, we had to discuss about going to university or making money off of social media, I paired with two people and we exchanged our point of view.

Continuing with the colored-rods dynamic, we had a very fun and interesting activiy of the United Nations, we had to create a country and each person in our group was a Minister of: Finance, Health, Education and Agriculture, we came up with the Republic of Danamima (DAniela, NAthaly, MIriam and MAría😂)

First we had to share our opinions on what we could provide to our country based on what everyone represented and then we had to have a meeting with the Ministers of the other countries and take notes of what we could apply to our country compared to what everyone else was doing and discuss it with the other Ministers of our country.

This is the meeting of the Ministers of Health of the Republic of Wakanda, New Orlando and Nautica
😂

Here is Nathaly (Minister of Finance of the Republic of Danamima😂) telling teacher Orlando what we learned from the other countries.

And to wrap up the class we had both the funniest and the most stressful activity, we had to get into pairs and untangle ourselves, the most important thing about this activy was TEAM WORK!

I paired with María but we were unable to untangle ourselves, we were rushing and then we got stressed out because we couldn't make it😂

Here you can see us struggling😆

And that is it for today's entry, yesterday's class was so dynamic and playful, I really enjoyed it and I really like that we get to apply theory to activities like this! Thank you so much for reading and stay tuned for the next entry, bye-bye!👋
