TPR (Total Physical Response)

 Hi everyone!😁

I am back with another English teaching method and the one I will be talking about in today's entry has got to be my favorite one so far: The Total Physical Response method.

It is all about having the students stand up from their seats and teach them the target language through physical activity. It was first proposed by the psychologist James Asher and he stated that students can learn one part of the language by moving their body and develop memory association: The more you move, the stronger the connection is.

Students will learn short commands while moving, or just little words, but these have a complete meaning and later on, this simple words will become into chunks and even sentences. Errors are expected in the classroom but is not that big of a deal, the teacher should make the student feel successful.

Through all of the different physical activities the teacher must observe what is going on in the classroom and what the students are doing to try and introduce new words and so on.

While using the SWOT method, we concluded that as a strength, using the TPR is a fun way to learn new vocabulary through physical activity. One weakness is that the classroom might get too noisy and sometimes students won't be able to concentrate. One opportunity is that students become good observers and they are able to introduce new things to the class. And a threat would be that introverted people might not like this kind of teaching.

Last Thursday we got into groups and did many activities, one of the songs that we sang was "If You're Happy And You Know It" and overall it was pretty fun to stand up and have fun with my classmates and I know that students that are on a basic level will enjoy it even more since they are having fun while also learning many new things through physical movement.
